During an first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” the metropolis, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious beginning to his tenure.

A Historic Figure

The new democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

A Sweeping Platform

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these programs may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Challenges

The new mayor will deal with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to ease these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly productive.

The Core Tests of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering city upkeep: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and making sure reliable transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
